FAQ

What Does Riding a Hot Air Balloon Feel Like?

It’s calmer than most people expect. There’s no engine noise, no turbulence, and no sense of speed. Once you’re off the ground, the balloon floats with the wind without rocking or swaying. Passengers often describe it as dreamlike, like standing on a balcony while the world sinks below them.

Wait, Hot Air Balloons Can’t Fly Whenever They Want?

No, they can’t! Flights are planned for sunrise because that time usually offers the best conditions for flying. What’s so special about the early morning? That’s when the valley air is usually coolest and most settled. As the day warms, breezes tend to build and become less predictable, so sunrise is the most reliable window.

But beyond making sure the wind and thermal variances are in check, there’s nothing like floating over Temecula Wine Country at daybreak. Temecula flies year-round, and the valley’s morning conditions are ideal for flights. That’s why you’ll see a cluster of balloons lifting off together at first light.

Of course, sometimes the conditions just aren’t right to fly. So, before California Dreamin’ riders meet at the Vindemia Winery, your pilot will check weather reports and forecasts. Based on the reports, you’ll either get a go or no-go call. If the weather isn’t within limits, that’s no problem. We’ll just schedule it for a new day.

Are hot air balloons scary or peaceful?

Most people are nervous at first. But once in the air, the fear tends to fade and the beauty of the scenery takes center stage. The movement of the balloon is so smooth that many find it peaceful or even meditative.

Can hot air balloons be steered?

Not in the way planes or cars are steered. Balloon pilots use vertical movement to catch winds at different altitudes, adjusting course by reading how the wind layers shift. It takes skill and local experience. But it’s not like turning a wheel. It’s different from other flying vehicles, but pilots have it down to a science!

Will I get motion sickness in a hot air balloon?

It’s uncommon. The balloon moves with the air without any sway or keel, so you won’t feel the jolts you might feel in other aircraft.7 The early morning conditions are typically very gentle too, so expect the ride to be peaceful.

How many people fit in a hot air balloon?

California Dreamin’s smallest hot air balloon accommodates between six and eight people, while our largest basket can hold up to fourteen.4

What does flying in a hot air balloon feel like?

Most first-timers are surprised by how smooth hot air balloon rides are once you’re in the air. Because a balloon moves with the breeze, there’s no jolting or “drop” sensation: just a slow ascent, a gorgeous view, and then a gentle descent.
