FAQs

What about Safety?

David & Gail Bradley welcome you to California Dreamin’. They have built their entire reputation on providing you with the adventure of your life. Since 1977 their pilots, staff, and crew have been extensively trained by employing rigid company practices that go beyond those required by law.

"Quality continues to be our main goal. Other companies claim to be the best however these companies know the standards we have set as the balloon aviation leader because they have adopted them."
California Dreamin' wants you to know there is nothing more important to us than safety. We are the only company in Southern California to meet the current regulations by the Public Utilities Commission.

What should I wear?

Hot Air Balloon

Recommended attire is casual outdoor active wear, and a jacket, sweatshirt or fleece pullover.  Comfortable shoes are suggested (no high heels).  Because the balloon burners radiate heat, we recommend that if you are over six feet tall that you wear a hat or a cap.  In the cooler months you can bring some gloves to wear.

Biplane

Recommended attire is casual outdoor active wear, and a mid weight jacket, sweatshirt or fleece pullover.  Comfortable shoes are suggested.  You may wish to dress in layers as if you were going on a motorcycle ride.  We have goggles and helmets for you.

What can I Bring?

Hot Air Balloon

A camera!  A video camera!  It is recommended you leave all other personal possessions safely locked in your car.

Biplane

Jacket, camera or video camera.  You may want to bring extra film.  Note: Panoramic or wide angle lenses work best.  Remember batteries!

What about bad weather?

Hot Air Balloon

Weather is obviously an important factor in ballooning. That is why we have “mandatory” phone calls prior to each flight, for that final “weather confirmation”.  If we do have to cancel the flight because of weather conditions, of course, there is no charge to our passengers.  We usually will be able to fly the following day, either Sunrise or Sunset Flights.  It is highly recommended that you keep a couple of “optional” days in mind when making your balloon ride reservation, just in case there is a weather cancellation.

Biplane

We have a near perfect climate here in Southern California- -however weather does play an important role in aviation.  You must call our office at 1-800-373-3359 the day of the flight to check-in for your Flight conditions.

Will it be windy or cool?

Hot Air Balloon

Only comfortably cool.  Unlike most areas of the country, the temperature in the balloon for the first 2000 feet is the same or slightly warmer.  This is because the inversion of warm air that flows toward the coastal region from the California Desert.  We recommend you bring a jacket or sweater.

Biplane

Unlike most areas in the country the temperature aloft for the first 2000 feet is similar or slightly warmer than the surface.  This is because of the inversion of warm air that flows from the California Desert.

How long will my adventure last?

Hot Air Balloon

From the time you leave your car until the time you return to your car, the time involved is usually three to three and a half hours. This includes driving you to the launch site in one of our Club Vans, watching the inflation of the balloon (perfect opportunity to use those cameras), the balloon ride itself, and having the celebration after landing. And of course for our Sunrise Flight, you will also enjoy the breakfast at La Vindemia. Of course, we drive you back to the meeting location.

Biplane

Our Pilot will need to brief you on the flight, assist in boarding the biplane, help buckle you in and plug in your headset. This preflight will take approximately 15 minutes. The pilot will then crank the engine and off to the runway you'll go.

Depending on weather and air traffic your adventure could be a few minutes plus or minus as your pilot works with other landing and departing aircraft.

What is Vindemia?

Hot Air Balloon

Vindemia is where we meet to begin your adventure for the Sunrise flight in Temecula! It is an exclusive private vineyard nestled in the middle of Temecula Wine Country. We are very fortunate to have such a lovely Italian setting for our meeting location and to enjoy our Champagne/Sparkling Cider Celebration at the end of the Sunrise Flight with a hosted gourmet pastry breakfast. What a perfect conclusion to a very unique experience!

Biplane

Vindemia is where the Hot Air Ballooning meets and concludes each day in Temecula. It is an exclusive private vineyard nestled in the middle of Temecula Wine Country. After your flight come visit us!

How many people will fit and are there any size or weight restrictions?

Hot Air Balloon

That depends on the number of reservations we have for that ride. We have a variety of colorful balloons, the smallest accommodates six to eight passengers, and the largest accommodates fourteen passengers! All of our baskets are large, European design, and partitioned to give each passenger maximum comfort and visibility. For safety reasons, the maximum weight limit per person is 300 lbs.

Biplane

Our Biplane accommodates two passengers at one time in the front cockpit. The total weight can be no more than 380 pounds. If space is a concern for you let us know and we'll do our best to advise you properly. Remember that you can always split the time and go one after the other.

What will we see?

Hot Air Balloon

For the morning Sunrise Temecula flight, everything Wine Country has to offer!  South Coast Resort, Ponte Winery, the vineyards of Temecula, snow capped mountains, citrus groves……and much, much more!

For the evening Sunset/Mountain Ride, the country estates of Rancho Santa Fe, citrus groves, and with the weather cooperating, incredible ocean views at sunset.

Biplane

From the front cockpit you will view the Santa Rosa Plateau, world famous Mount Palomar Observatory, the Pechanga Resort & Casino, Wine Country Aloft at its best, Vail Lake and Lake Skinner, the old Butterfield Stage Route and maybe sneak a view of Wild Horse Peak Vineyard.

Why so early??

Hot Air Balloon

Temecula

Because of the wind variances, we can only fly over Temecula Wine Country in the early morning.  It would not be safe to fly later in the day, when the winds could become problematic.

Del Mar

It’s those pesky winds again!  Only this time it’s just the opposite, there are less wind variances in the evening hours.  And, come to think of it, it’s pretty incredible to have ocean views at Sunset!

How high will we go?

Hot Air Balloon

When you are aloft in the balloon you will be around fifteen hundred feet above the earth, and that’s what makes those views so fantastic!

Biplane

The biplane can go above 10,000 feet MSL but the flight packages are based at 1,000 – 2,000. AGL.

How far will we travel?

Hot Air Balloon

The average distance that you will travel in the balloon is three to seven miles, depending on winds.

Biplane

The flight package you choose is an approximate time aloft. The route and distance you travel is based on this time. The average 35 minute flight covers 30 statue miles.

What if I have motion sickness?

Hot Air Balloon

There is no turbulence sway or keel in a hot air balloon.  However, if you are especially sensitive to motion, medication should be effective.

Biplane

We recommend that you not eat 1-2 hours prior to you biplane adventure. The flight can be gentle or more thrilling if you choose- -and ask your pilot to “Crank and Bank” but we do not do loops or rolls. The front cockpit is armed with a supply of bags for … well you know.

Can I steer?

Hot Air Balloon

A balloon moves with the wind, at the same speed and in the same direction. So no you can not steer in the traditional sense however “steering” is done by ascending or descending into the wind “layers” to move your course from one heading or direction to another heading maybe to the right or left based on the winds available on a given day.

Biplane

You can steer and follow along with your expert pilot as he flies into the era of “Stick and Rudder”. The U-fly it is an option on any flight length package and requires the front cockpit stick be mounted (this requires that only one passenger is in the front cockpit at a time).
